VON Sarnia-Lambton Adult Day Program Expands into Homes

(Sarnia, Ontario) August 23 2021 – VON Sarnia-Lambton (Victorian Order of Nurses) is celebrating the successful expansion of its Adult Day Program (ADP); a program designed to benefit adults living with Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia or other cognitive impairments.

VON began offering an in-home respite component of the program in September 2020 to fill a gap created by COVID restrictions, and is seeing an overwhelmingly positive response from clients and their family members. A VON team including a Personal Support Worker (PSW) and a Recreational Therapist visit clients’ homes for three-hour sessions, engaging in activities such as puzzles, crafting, simple exercises and outdoor walks with clients who are able.

One family member shares “I am happy that my loved one is going out for walks and doing programming at home that I can’t encourage them to do on my own”.

What was originally planned as a quick fix during COVID restrictions has now turned into a model used to better serve VON’s existing clients and others now waiting to join the group ADP operating at 845 Trillium Park. “We still have COVID-related capacity limits to our group sessions, so this in-home approach offers us a wonderful opportunity to connect with others who can’t participate in the group sessions.  The program offers physical, mental and social stimulation to participants, and provides much-needed respite to their caregivers” says Nicole Hunter, (Manager, Home and Community Care, CSS).  “We are up to 34 visits per week with 12 clients now, and are open to expanding the service.”

Anyone interested in applying is invited to call the VON Sarnia-Lambton Adult Day Program directly at 519-332-8621. Information regarding the referral process will be provided and the cost of the program is $15/day.
