Live every day
We've been leading home and community care in Canada for over a century. We were among the first organizations in the country to offer home care and public health nursing and now, over a century later, we provide home and community support services to over 10,000 people every day across Ontario and Nova Scotia.
We help make every day as full of meaning and hope as possible.
We help our clients stay healthy, live well and remain active. We support those in frail and failing health and we contribute to the health and improved quality of life of Canadians in their homes and communities, where they want to be.
We strongly believe that clients and their families have the right to make informed decisions about their care. We encourage them to become partners in both its planning and delivery. We ensure that every plan of care we develop responds to the unique needs and concerns of our clients and their families, including personal and cultural values.
We are a trusted registered charity who works hard to raise donations from individuals and corporations. We also receive pay-for-service fees from provincial governments; grants from federal, provincial and municipal governments and from foundations and other charitable organizations; and pay-for-service fees from community partners and recipients. More information is available in our annual reports.
Thousands of people in communities across Ontario and Nova Scotia work for VON. Some oversee or support the administration of programs and services. Others liaise with our partners in health and community care. Most are our nurses and caregivers, who have been the heart of VON Canada since our organization was founded in 1897.
Responding to local needs is one of our strengths. Our community corporations are local charitable corporations made up of volunteer leaders who support VON Canada’s mission in their own communities. In partnership with VON Canada staff, they help build relationships with other local leaders and community groups, agencies and others to strengthen VON’s work. They raise funds to support VON clients, programs and initiatives, and advocate on behalf of VON in their communities. And they work with each other, and with VON’s national leadership, to support VON wherever we provide care.
Our vision
Every life lived to the fullest.
Our mission
We help people live in their homes and communities by delivering the caring support that they and their families need.
Our values
Our values guide how we work with each other, with our partners and with our clients and families.
Respect: We support others honestly, openly and fairly.
Compassion: We listen and serve with sensitivity, empathy and concern.
Excellence: We commit to everyday improvement in all that we do.
VON Canada is committed to embracing and celebrating diversity, equity, and inclusion (EDI) as fundamental to living out our values of respect, compassion, and excellence in all that we do.
We best serve our clients and staff when we foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. VON seeks to advance the culture of home and community care by embracing and celebrating diversity to create an equitable and inclusive organization.
VON has demonstrated its commitment to evidence based practice and quality patient care for over 20 years through the internationally recognized designation of Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) awarded by Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario.
Through the recognition of being a BPSO, VON has worked to continuously align our practices with evidence-based Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs), support staff engagement in best practice implementation, promote professional development, as well as reduce variations in practice by ensuring that our practice is rooted in evidence across all sites in both provinces.
Through the work of BPSO, VON has systemically implemented numerous best practice guidelines including those focusing on palliative care, falls and injury prevention, people and family centered care, preceptorship in nursing and adopting e-health solutions.
