Update About VON Safety Measures During COVID-19

Dear Client and family members,

As we enter the summer months and see some easing of public health restrictions related to COVID-19, I want to assure you that the safety of our clients, families, volunteers and staff remains a top priority at VON.

In recent months, VON has increased the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to make sure that everyone stays safe while delivering and receiving care.

As mentioned in my last safety update to you, VON staff are using face masks and eye protection for all client visits – even when the COVID-19 screening results are clear. In cases where staff are providing essential care to someone who has a positive screen for COVID-19, they are also wearing gowns and gloves. Staff will also be providing face masks to clients with a positive screen, which may be worn while these clients are receiving care, to further reduce possible spread.

VON care providers are trained to safely put on and remove any PPE and are regularly checked to make sure they do this safely. This includes handwashing before and after wearing PPE to reduce spread of germs and illness as well as keeping at least 6 feet/2 metres distance from others when possible. Please rest assured that VON is continuing to comply with direction provided by public health experts at the provincial department/ministry of health and all PPE used by VON staff meets or exceeds recognized standards set by Health Canada and other agencies.

The attached Fact Sheet provides you with up-to-date information on the measures VON has in place to keep you safe.

If you need more information or have any questions about changes to our safety precautions, please speak to your local VON office, to Continuing Care (if in Nova Scotia) or your local health authority (if in Ontario). You may also visit the VON website for regular updates on COVID-19.

Thank you and please continue to stay safe,

Jo-Anne Poirier,
President and Chief Executive Officer
