Sobeys Donation Boosts VON Food Security Programs for Seniors

VON Community Support Services in Nova Scotia has received a $100,000 donation in pre-paid snack packs from Sobeys – the largest corporate gift received by VON in Nova Scotia – which will further support clients of VON’s Frozen Favourites meal program.

The pre-paid snack packs will be shared across all VON’s frozen meal programs in the province, making it possible for VON to provide additional food at no charge to clients. Together, Sobeys and VON pre-selected nutritious food items, based on client preferences, such as soup, crackers and fruit, which will provide VON clients with more variety and value to their meals.

“We are incredibly grateful to Sobeys for this generous gift, and for recognizing the importance of building healthy communities together. Their support will help hundreds of families and people who continue to rely on VON during these uncertain times. I sincerely thank Sobeys and its leadership team for contributing so meaningfully to food security for seniors in Nova Scotia,” said Jo-Anne Poirier, President and CEO, VON Canada.

VON’s meal programs – Frozen Favourites and Meals on Wheels – support hundreds of Nova Scotians each year and rely on donor contributions to provide accessible and nutritious meal options to seniors, persons with disabilities, and those who require extra support with mealtime. During the COVID-19 pandemic, VON quickly expanded our Frozen Favourites program to serve hundreds of new clients across Nova Scotia in response to an increasing food security gap.

Sobeys’ donation was made through the Sobeys Inc. Community Action Fund, as part of their work in supporting communities throughout the pandemic. This generous gift will enable VON to continue to meet critical food needs of the individuals for whom we care.
